RSPB Shearwater and Skua Cruises at Flamborough Cliffs
The seabird equivalent of the Olympics is set to start on the Yorkshire Coast and the RSPB is inviting people to watch all the action. On 28th August 2010 at 10:45, the RSPB is starting its Date with Nature Autumn series of skua and shearwater cruises. The trips, on board the Yorkshire Belle, sail three miles off the coast of Flamborough Head to witness the international field of feathered superstars and their outstanding feats.
Which bird is going to win the high speed chase? The favourite to win is the Arctic skua as it chases high into the air, twisting and turning in spectacular aerial sprints, often chasing gulls and terns. The marathon, on the other hand, is likely to be won by the Arctic tern, which flies farther and sees more daylight than any other seabird, as it breeds in the Arctic and northern UK and yet flies to Australia to spend the winter.
As part of the cruise you will be taken into the heart of the action and, with luck, see these bird champions at close range. You will sail out to sea in order to get a close-up view of the many species of migrating seabirds as they pass over the North Sea. They include the Arctic skuas and Arctic terns, as well as gannets (the largest seabirds with a six foot wingspan), auks, gulls, Manx and sooty shearwaters, all of which can sometimes be seen right alongside the boat. The cruise can be enjoyed even if you're not sure of your skuas from your shearwaters, as volunteers from the RSPB's East Yorkshire Local Group will be on board, offering expert commentary, and helping to point out and identify the many species of birds as they fly past.
The cruises all leave from Bridlington Harbour. There is ample covered and outdoor seating, a saloon bar with hot and cold drinks and, of course, toilets. The cruises will run in the morning every Saturday and/or Sunday from 28th August to 3rd October, and tickets are £15 per adult, £7.50 per child (under 14) or £37.50 for a family ticket.
